Browser-based BehaviorTree.CPP editor with Nav2 import/export
Browser-based BehaviorTree.CPP editor with Nav2 import/export (free, open source)
The author maintains behaviortrees.com, a free, open-source visual behavior tree editor running in the browser. It imports and exports BehaviorTree.CPP XML (v4 for Jazzy and Groot2, v3.8 for Humble), including Nav2's navigate-to-pose trees. The tool includes a CLI for CI pipelines to validate tree structures (e.g., catching dangling children or cycles) and convert between BT.CPP versions and behavior3 JSON. An MCP server allows AI assistants to draft, validate, and share trees via links. It is designed to complement Groot2 by requiring no installation, making it suitable for quick sketching, reviewing, or sharing. The project seeks feedback from Nav2 users regarding missing features and round-trip reliability.
The tool offers a browser-based visual editor for BehaviorTree.CPP XML (versions v4 and v3.8) with specific support for Nav2 navigate-to-pose trees, validated via CI pipelines using Docker containers to ensure compatibility with real libraries.

I maintain behaviortrees.com, a free, open-source visual behavior tree editor that runs in the browser. It imports and exports BehaviorTree.CPP XML (v4 for Jazzy and Groot2, v3.8 for Humble), including Nav2’s navigate-to-pose trees. Changes to the BT.CPP support are checked in CI by loading the editor’s exports into the real BT.CPP v4 and v3.8 libraries via Docker.
It also comes with:
- A CLI for CI pipelines:
npx behaviortrees validate tree.xmlcatches dangling children, nodes with two parents, cycles and malformed decorators.npx behaviortrees convertconverts between BT.CPP v3 and v4 XML and behavior3 JSON. - An MCP server (
https://www.behaviortrees.com/mcp), so AI assistants like Claude can draft a tree, validate it, and hand you a link that opens it in the editor.
It’s meant to complement Groot2, not replace it: there’s nothing to install, and it’s quick for sketching, reviewing or sharing a tree. A link carries the whole tree, so you can drop one in an issue or PR comment.
I’d especially like feedback from Nav2 users: what’s missing, and which trees don’t round-trip cleanly?
