Kodiak and IKEA Supply have announced that the companies will embark on the next step in their four-year partnership.
The companies said that IKEA will be Kodiak’s driverless launch shipper partner later in 2026, and will become the first company to take advantage of the safety and efficiency benefits that result from Kodiak’s driverless freight capabilities.
Kodiak and IKEA expand driverless freight
Over the last four years, Kodiak said that it has delivered more than 1,300 loads and logged more than 750,000 miles while autonomously carrying IKEA goods with a safety observer aboard.
Kodiak said that together, the companies have grown to understand how autonomous driving technology can improve safety and enhance reliability throughout the IKEA supply chain. Kodiak added that it now knows exactly what it takes to transform the underlying technology into an AI-driven product that generates value and efficiency.
The company said that unsupervised driverless operations - no human in the cab - represent a milestone the entire Kodiak team has worked toward since it was founded nearly a decade ago.
Kodiak said that it is now only months away.
Initial driver-out service focused on I-45 in Texas
Just as IKEA built a global business providing well-designed, functional home furnishings at affordable prices, Kodiak said that its work together has forged the capabilities and know-how needed for a well-designed, cost-effective driverless product our customers can efficiently utilize and rely upon.
The company said that driverless service will begin on the same route that’s been safely tested in Texas for four years without incident.
The initial driver-out leg will cover 219 miles, primarily along Interstate 45 between Kodiak’s Houston and Dallas-area facilities. The companies said that this is part of the established 292-mile delivery route connecting the IKEA distribution center in Baytown with the IKEA store in Frisco.
In preparation for this service, Kodiak said that the company has not only learned the big things but also the little things that really matter, including:
- Exactly when and where trucks should be launched
- Knowing precisely what time they will arrive in Frisco so unloading can be scheduled at a specific dock door
- Collecting predictive maintenance data insights and establishing proactive maintenance plans for trucks.
Kodiak said that this orchestration allows for greater asset utilization and improved reliability throughout the IKEA supply chain.
Safety commitment drives the partnership
Ahead of the launch, Kodiak said that it is completing its highway launch safety case for driverless long-haul operations. The company said that the safety case is a structured, evidence-backed argument that the Kodiak Driver, its autonomous driving system, is safe to operate without a human on board in a defined operating area.
By concentrating on long-haul routes, Kodiak and IKEA said that they have learned how adopting autonomous truck technology can enhance human drivers’ quality of life, focusing their efforts on the local driving jobs that most prefer. The companies said that the technology can reduce their time sleeping on the side of the highway and instead be home with family and friends.
